Dr. Philip Buckenmeyer

Buckenmeyer_Phil08B.jpgDr. Philip Buckenemeyer, chair of the Department of Kinesiology at SUNY Cortland and Director of the Center for Obesity Research in Education (C.O.R.E.) frequently presents on topics including childhood obesity, cardiac rehabilitation, wellness, exercise and women’s health at professional conferences and public forums. He is the author or co-author of many peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and reviews. His research has been supported by grants and he has served as a grant evaluator.

Involved over the years in many community health and wellness programs, he has served since 2006 on the Cortland School District Coordinated School Health and Wellness Team. For the last six years, he has collaborated with Cortland County Health Department to prepare and analyze a physical activity survey for Cortland County residents.

Before joining SUNY Cortland, he chaired the University of Akron’s Department of Sport Science and Wellness Education and directed the university’s Exercise Physiology Laboratory and University-based Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and Wellness Program. Appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Physical and Health Education in 1997, he was promoted to associate professor in 2000 and coordinated the department from 1997-2000.

During his 31-year teaching, clinical and research career, Buckenmeyer has also served SUNY Upstate Medical Center as research director for the Women’s Wellness Center, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; and as a faculty member at Syracuse University, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and University of Maryland College Park, Maryland.

He holds certifications as an American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Program Director, an ACSM Exercise Test Technologist, a National Athletic Trainers’ Association (N.A.T.A.) Athletic Trainer and in CPR. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, Mid-Atlantic Regional Chapter of ACSM and the National Athletic Trainers Association.

Buckenmeyer was included in the Spring 2007 Cambridge Who’s Who Among Executives and Professionals “Honors Edition.” In Fall 2006, he was recognized as a 25-year member in the American College of Sports Medicine. In Fall 2004, he received a SUNY Promising Inventor Award as a preliminary step to patenting two computer programs, the “K-6 Childhood Obesity Database” and “Interactive Fitness/Weight Control Videogame.” His high school in Alexander, N.Y., named him to its 2003 Hall of Fame. The University of Akron presented him with its 1999-2000 Outstanding Researcher Award in the College of Education.

Born in Batavia, N.Y., Buckenmeyer has a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education/Elementary and Secondary Education and his teaching certificate from St. Bonaventure University. He earned a Master of Science in Athletic Training from Indiana State University, where he also served as a graduate teaching assistant. Buckenmeyer received his doctorate in exercise physiology from the University of Maryland at College Park, where he minored in biochemistry, biomechanics and statistics.
