STATEN ISLAND, NY -- On June 20th, at the Staten Island Jewish Community Center, twenty coaches were trained in SUNY's Youth Sports NY coaching certification program. The program was instructed by SUNY Trainer, Tom (Hubby) Hubmaster, and hosted by the President of Leadership Through Sports, David McGoy.
Leadership Through Sports is a basketball league on Staten Island with dozens of coaches and athletes in its program. McGoy utilized the Youth Sports NY program to address some of the challenges of establishing a positive youth sports environment by focusing on youth development as opposed to sports based solely on competition. McGoy felt that Youth Sports NY offered an evidence-based curriculum that helped address the challenges of youth sports as a whole, thus making it easier to provide solutions. He says, "It [the training] gives coaches a framework to interact with players, parents and other teams/leagues in a positive, constructive ways that balance competition with athletic/[youth] development."
McGoy felt the training for his coaches was worth setting aside the time to require his coaches attend, "This training was extremely valuable. The coaches who participated were immediately able to incorporate the information into their team philosophy. It is important for all youth coaches to acquire the type of knowledge that was covered in this session", McGoy said. When asked if he would recommend a training to a neighboring community or league, he responded, "I would, have, and will continue to do so! We plan to sponsor at least one training per year for the coaches in our community on Staten Island. "
