NOTE ON CHILD SAFETY
The SUNY Youth Sports Institute recommends that all youth sports programs
perform a background screening on their coaches. For more information click here.
Vince Lombardi once said “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the
only thing”. It may be true in the professional leagues; it is not the right statement
for youth sports. Kids are supposed to begin to learn about
the sport they are playing and have fun with it, especially for kids on an under eight year
old soccer team. Michael Kinahan of the U8 girls team in Scituate took things
too far. "Chase every ball and dig in corners like a
Michael Vick pit bull", he wrote in an email. "I believe winning is fun and losing is for
losers" and “Second place trophies are nothing to be proud of as they
serve only as a reminder that you missed your goal."
