While parent-coach conflicts are a national problem, Rhode Island officials believe parents have become a giant menace in their tiny state. To combat the problem, State Senator John Tassoni wants government oversight of youth sports. The Senator has introduced a bill that would create a government-run council to serve as a third party mediator between feuding parents and coaches. The council would be run by “volunteer government workers,” who would have the power to issue fines to unruly parents. While many coaches have applauded the proposal, the average Rhode Island voter is not pleased with the bill. One of Tassoni’s constituents stated that the Senator should focus on the Ocean State’s failing economy rather than acting as “Big Brother” over youth sports. The State Senate is scheduled to debate the legislation on Wednesday, followed by a vote to send the bill to the Governor’s desk.
