ASHEVILLE – During the last few minutes of each practice, members of the Go To Goal youth soccer program find a quiet spot to write in their journals.
The elementary-age girls write about events in their lives; relationships with family and friends; about dealing with peer pressure. The journals are read by coach Viviana Saraceno.
“They do share their feelings, and fortunately, I have time to write back,” Saraceno said. “I wasn’t told to have a dialogue, but I think it helps a great deal. The girls are having an individualized, written conversation with me, which I think gives them some important attention. I am also definitely encouraged by some of what I read, especially when I get some really thoughtful responses.”
